Sint-Trudo Hospital partners with Nomios to strengthen cybersecurity and ensure NIS2 compliance

Sint-Trudo Hospital, an important regional hospital in Belgium, has partnered with Nomios to modernise its cybersecurity infrastructure and prepare for the upcoming NIS2 regulations.

With 310 beds, over 1,000 employees, more than 200 doctors, and tens of thousands of patients treated each year, Sint-Trudo plays a central role in regional healthcare. In 2024 alone, the hospital admitted nearly 14,000 patients, performed 33,000 day hospital treatments and registered more than 24,000 visits in its emergency department. This scale of activity, combined with the highly sensitive nature of medical data, makes cybersecurity a top priority.

Facing today’s threats, meeting tomorrow’s standards

“As a hospital, we are a target for malicious actors. At the same time, regulations like GDPR and NIS2 require us to guarantee that sensitive information is properly protected and that data leaks are avoided,” explains Peter De Bruyne, IT Director at Sint-Trudo Hospital.

The hospital needed a modern Managed Detection and Response (MDR) solution, including expert support to interpret security events, identify real threats versus false positives, and respond swiftly when necessary. In addition to the technical requirements, Sint-Trudo Hospital was looking for a partner that could think proactively and provide continuous support beyond a standard supplier relationship.

Expertise that complements, not replaces

Nomios helped Sint-Trudo evaluate several EDR solutions and selected the most suitable one, complemented by Nomios Guardian Managed Services. This service provides access to Nomios’ security analysts, who monitor and investigate events on the hospital’s IT platform in collaboration with the in-house ICT team of the Sint-Trudo Hospital.

“An EDR doesn’t just look for anomalies, it analyses attacker behaviour inside the network, enabling us to intervene in the right way. With Nomios Guardian, Sint-Trudo Hospital can rely on our cybersecurity experts to handle complex investigations while their own IT team remains in control of daily operations,” says Herwig Mertens, Director Engineering at Nomios.

The deployment ensures that vulnerabilities are detected, intrusion attempts are monitored, and potential threats can be neutralised quickly. This combined approach relieves the hospital’s IT department of the cybersecurity burden while raising their overall protection level.

Beyond technology: a true partnership

The collaboration with Nomios goes beyond technology. Over the past two years, Sint-Trudo Hospital and Nomios have built a close partnership based on trust and a proactive approach.

“I believe that’s the biggest added value,” notes Peter De Bruyne. “Anyone can provide a service, but what makes the difference is the way Nomios anticipates our needs and thinks along with us. Our IT team cannot be experts in every aspect of cybersecurity – with Nomios, we can call on the right expertise when we need it.”

Looking ahead, the focus will be on ensuring full NIS2 compliance. “With NIS2, we will undoubtedly identify areas for improvement in our security and processes. Together with Nomios, we’ll continue to close those gaps to remain compliant and resilient.”
